Contrary to popular belief, accessing Island Garden City of Samal Davao del Norte is actually quite simple. So, first things first, book a flight from Manila to Davao. No worries, there are a bunch of major airlines that fly that route, so you can easily find one that suits your budget and schedule.
Now, to get to Samal Island, you have a couple of options. You can hop on a 20-minute bus and barge ride from Davao to Samal Island. It’s a pretty convenient choice. But you can also head straight to the pier in Davao City and take a boat or a ferry that runs 24 hours a day, and you’ll be on your way to the island in no time!
Remember guys, it’s always a good idea to plan ahead and check transportation schedules to make your journey as smooth as possible.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?
The good news is, Island Garden City of Samal Davao del Norte is a year-round destination with warm temperatures and sunshine all year long. However, there are certain seasons that may be more favorable for different types of activities.
For those who love the beach and water activities, the best time to visit Samal Island is from November to April, which is the dry season. If you’re interested in festivals and cultural events, the best time to visit Samal Island is during the Kadayawan Festival in August, which celebrates the harvest season with parades, food fairs, and cultural performances.

This is not just any ordinary cave – it’s the home of the largest colony of fruit bats in the ENTIRE WORLD, with millions of bats roosting inside. (And yep, it’s officially listed in the guinness book of world records)
Prepare to be amazed as you witness this natural wonder up close and personal. Imagine seeing millions of bats hanging upside down. It’s a breathtaking sight that will leave you in awe. Aside from the incredible visual spectacle, you’ll also learn more about bats.
So, whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply seeking an unforgettable experience, the Monfort Bat Cave is a must-visit destination on your Samal Island itinerary.
Pro Tip: If you’re up for more adventure, consider spelunking in other caves around the area, such as the Baga, Magongawong, and Balete caves. Each cave offers a unique and thrilling experience. Make sure to pack appropriate gear and a sense of adventure for this unforgettable journey!
Hagimit Falls
Looking for a refreshing escape from the island heat? Our next spot has got you covered! Hagimit Falls is a true natural wonder of Samal Island. Surrounded by lush greenery, this serene waterfall offers a cool and inviting pool for swimming and relaxation.
To get to the falls, you need to go through a bit of a hike from the gate through a concrete stairway. Once you arrive, you’ll be awed by the stunning sight of cascading water.
If you’re planning to stay for a while, there are a few cottages available in the area where you can enjoy a picnic or simply sit back and relax while admiring the breathtaking scenery. Camping is also a popular activity here, so make sure to bring all the necessary equipment if you want to try it out.
Kaputian Beach
If you’re a huge fan of beaches, you’d never run out of options to choose from in Samal Island. The best thing about it is its preserved and uncrowded nature, allowing for moments of peaceful alone time.
What sets Kaputian Beach (our favorite, even though one of us had a hard time pronouncing “Kaputian” lol! Watch our vlog to know what we’re saying) apart from the other beaches in Samal Island is its lush greenery. The beach is surrounded by tall trees and coconut palms, providing a perfect shady spot for a siesta. The crystal-clear waters are also a sight to behold, perfect for a refreshing swim or snorkeling.
And here’s a bonus—Kaputian Beach is also home to a mini forest and a bat cave! Take a hike to the forest and you’ll see various flora and fauna. And if you’re feeling adventurous, explore the bat cave and meet some of its furry residents.
Vanishing Islands
Now, you may be wondering, “what are the Vanishing Islands?” Well, they’re exactly what they sound like—islands that appear and disappear with the tides.
The islands are made up of sandbars and small islets, and they only appear during low tide. You can walk around them and explore the little pools of water that form between the sandbars.
Just a heads up—when the tide comes in, the islands disappear again. It’s like they were never there in the first place! It’s a unique and surreal experience that you won’t forget anytime soon.
If you’re lucky, you may even spot some wildlife during your visit. There are birds and crabs that call the Vanishing Islands home, and you may even see some fish swimming in the shallow water.
Canibad Beach
If you’re looking for a quieter spot compared to some of the more popular beaches on Samal Island, head over to Canibad Beach. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.
One of the unique features of Canibad Beach is the rock formations. There are several large boulders that provide a stunning backdrop for photos or a cool place to explore. You could also jump off from a cliff of 6 to 8 meters high, which Nelson did even though he was dead scared!!! You’ll know what we mean when you watch the vlog.
You can read a book, take a nap, or simply stare out at the sea. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can go snorkeling or kayaking.
Isla Reta Beach
This beautiful resort offers a slice of paradise that will leave you amazed. Picture yourself surrounded by palm trees, white sandy beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise waters—it’s like stepping into a postcard.
The resort offers a range of activities — you can relax on the soft sand or go snorkeling to see colorful fish and corals. If you’re feeling adventurous, try camping or helmet diving. When you’re hungry, there’s a nice restaurant where you can enjoy local food and drinks while enjoying the beach view. And when you still can’t get enough of the place, the resort has cozy cottages and rooms where you can rest and wake up to the sound of the ocean.
WHERE TO STAY?

For digital nomads
If you’re a digital nomad, staying at a coworking space like Aplaya Beachfront Coworking is the perfect choice. You can work while enjoying the beach and meeting like-minded people. You can have an ordinary room with a double-sized bed for as low as P800 if it’s a day tour, P1,000 for overnight, and P1,200 for a full 24-hour stay.
For solo travelers
For solo travelers, you can’t go wrong with La Vida Orchard Samal. It’s a small resort that offers privacy and tranquility, perfect for those who want to recharge and relax.
For friend groups
If you’re traveling with a group of friends, staying at Precious Garden Resort is a great option. It has a large swimming pool, beach access, and a variety of activities to enjoy together.
For couples
Pearl Farm Beach Resort is the most beautiful hotel on the island, perfect for a romantic getaway. Its stunning views of Mt. Apo and Davao Gulf, secluded location, luxurious amenities, and breathtaking scenery make it the ideal place to unwind and reconnect.
Just a heads up though, this is a top-notch private resort so expect it to be extra fancy and expensive. But if you’re planning to make a surprise proposal to your girlfriend or spend your honeymoon, it’s really worth the price!
For families
If you’re traveling with kids, Bluejaz Resort and Waterpark is a great option. It has a water park, playground, and a variety of activities for kids of all ages to enjoy.
For budget travelers
If you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodations, Punta del Sol Beach Resort is a great option. For just P1,000, two people can spend a night in a non-aircon room. It also has a variety of room types to choose from, like private rooms and dorm rooms.
Bonus: Another option for “budget–arians” is La Vida Orchard Samal. We had a blast during our time on Samal Island, and our stay at La Vida Orchard was the cherry on top. WHAT TO EAT?
The Island offers a variety of delicious dishes that reflect the island’s rich cultural heritage and natural resources. Some of the must-try dishes include:
- Kinilaw – A fresh raw fish or seafood marinated in vinegar, citrus juices, onion, ginger, chili, and salt. The acidity of the marinade “cooks” the fish and gives it a refreshing tangy flavor.
- Sinuglaw – A delicious combination of grilled pork belly (sinugba) and kinilaw. The smoky flavor of the pork and the tartness of the kinilaw make a perfect match.
- Sinugbang Bodboron – Grilled Mackerel Scad, commonly known as “bodboron,” is a simple yet flavorful meal composed of grilled fish and eggplant salad, served with rice and a spicy vinegar dip.
- Sinugbang Bagaybay – A must-try grilled or roasted tuna fish roe/ This unique delicacy is often served with salted egg and a dipping sauce made from vinegar, calamansi, and onions.
- Pasayan – A mouthwatering seafood dish made with fresh shrimps cooked in a rich and flavorful oyster sauce.
- Imbaw – A popular soup dish made with clams and fresh vegetables.
- Lato – A type of seaweed salad made from fresh seaweed commonly known as “lato.” It is tossed with grated green mango, tomatoes, onion, and dressed with native vinegar and calamansi juice. This refreshing salad offers a unique texture and a subtle ocean flavor.
Aside from these dishes, Samal Island also has various fruit plantations, so make sure to try the local fruits such as pomelo, durian, and mangosteen.
GOOD TO KNOW
Mode of Payment
Most restaurants and shops in Samal Island accept cash as the primary mode of payment. Some establishments may also accept credit and debit cards, but it’s always best to carry some cash with you. There are ATMs available on the island, but they can be limited, so it’s advisable to withdraw cash before heading to Samal Island.
Language
The main language spoken in Samal Island is Cebuano, but many locals can also speak Tagalog and English. If you’re traveling to Samal Island from abroad, it’s a good idea to bring a phrasebook or download a language translation app to help you communicate with the locals. However, most tourist spots and establishments have staff who can speak English, so language barriers are generally not a big issue.
