Since we live in the Philippines, we’ve always been fascinated by the country’s beautiful landscapes and breathtaking views. The best part is that anyone can experience these amazing sceneries in every part of the country. But here’s the catch – not all of them are easily accessible! Our trip to Mount Apo in Davao, Philippines was a real challenge, but oh so worth it!

Mount Apo Davao Philippines

Just a quick fact, Mount Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines. It is 2,954 meters above sea level. While we knew we were up for a steep challenge, we were ready to give our all and go through great lengths for such a rewarding experience! From our initial preparations to our overall journey – we’ve got it all covered for you.

The start of our Journey

Like with all our trips, we first did a stopover to eat our breakfast before heading to the trail. Of course, you can never go wrong with Jollibee! Reminder for everyone: remember to eat your breakfast to save yourself from starving during your hike or any form of exercise –  we promise you, you’ll thank us later.

Not long after this, we finally met up with Anjo, our tour guide, to officially start our hike! There are a variety of trails to take when going to Mt. Apo, but we decided to take the Bansalan Trail. Usually, it takes three days and two nights, but as for us who want to make things fast-paced, we decided to do it two days and one night.

Going to the trail took us about 45 minutes to hike before going to the actual adventure. We were told that it would take 6 hours in total going to the next campsite, so we made sure to bring all the stuff we needed without carrying too much of a heavy load. Thankfully, our gear from Decathlon definitely saved us.

The rain won’t stop us!

While climbing Mt. Apo is generally permitted all year, there is a specific period considered the best time to plan your trip. Although we can say that it is pretty hard to predict the weather as

we encountered some heavy rain during our trek, it didn’t stop us from climbing our way to the top! We had to make a stop to wear our raincoats and ensure our bags would not get wet.

After preparing, we walked through the muddy path, and we suffered! We fell and slipped so many times. So ensure you are ready for worst-case scenarios brought by bad weather, just in case.

Rain and Wet

So just a friendly tip, to get the most out of your trip to Mt. Apo, plan it between November and May or during the dry season. But if you’re up for an adventure, whatever it takes, pack your bags and find a flight going to Mount Apo in Davao, Philippines, that fits your budget and schedule.

What we brought with us and what you should too!

The way to the Mount Apo base camp was steep, muddy, and indeed challenging! Yes, we struggled with carrying our things all by ourselves as we didn’t want to hire porters (the people who carry the gear for trekking on your behalf and ensure that everything you need is with you). But we were able to arrive there after all the struggles our team has faced.

One thing that made the hike bearable is the stuff that we got with us. Of course, how can we forget? Thanks to our Decathlon stuff. Not us having a competition on who owns more products from the brand (you’ll know more about a lot of this in our vlog!). But honestly, Decathlon is a very affordable brand, and the quality is superb, as one of our friends has owned a bag and has been with him for two decades!

Another thing you guys, considering that this is an outdoor activity, make sure that you are not just physically prepared but also mentally. It will not be a smooth journey. This feat is only for some (one of our friends, by the way, did not make it to the top). Also, you may face a lot of challenges, bad weather for example. You must also secure your climbing permit before you hike Mount Apo in Davao, Philippines.

Things we’ve learned while climbing

Our friendly tip when climbing Mount Apo with your friends, you must first remember to shut up! And do not say bad things about them, especially when they fall, because the next thing you know, you’ll experience what they just did. As they say, karma in Mount Apo is digital!

Kidding aside, we’ve learned that good physical condition is essential. It will help if you prepare yourself before climbing Mount Apo in Davao, Philippines. Also, it is crucial to have a backup for everything. A friend got his shoe broken. Good thing another friend has an extra that he used and borrowed. Our drone crashed and got lost in the middle of nowhere. We tried our best to look for it. Fortunately, we were able to find it after getting into the woods and facing danger.

Remember to know how to get along with others, as you will encounter many people along the way. You will build friendships and bonds with amazing people inside and outside your group, making the experience even more memorable!
